The Markets Wanniassa has adopted a ‘give back’ approach from day one.  Actively supporting fundraising for Heartkids (www.heartkids.org.au) in memory of Billy Dance.

Billy Dance, born to Mari and Andrew Dance, was a beautiful vibrant baby boy with the bluest of eyes.  Unfortunately Billy died suddenly at just over 11 weeks old due to an undiagnosed heart condition. Billy’s parents are remarkable folk and through his mum Mari’s writings Fiona learned that Mari and Andrew made a decision to focus on raising both funds for research and awareness of heart conditions in children as part of their grieving process.  When approached, Mari and Andrew chose Heartkids as their charity for The Markets Wanniassa to support.  We have a permanent fundraising tin on the counter “Billy’s Tin” and will hold fundraising events throughout the year for Heartkids.  Billy is always with us in store, with several framed images of his precious little face adorning our shop.

The Markets Wanniassa supports breastfeeding, and as many of our contributors are mothers themselves (Fiona is mum to 9 children herself) we have created a space within our store for mums to breastfeed comfortably. We support ABA (Australian Breasfeeding Association) and are financial members of their organization

Within The Markets Canberra is a dedicated ‘Community Space” where local organisations can display their fundraising events, shop/service information and connect with people within community. We encourage this space to be used to notify the community of local markets and other events – there is no cost for participating in our community space, so please bring your flyers and posters along for inclusion.

The workshop space within The Markets Wanniassa will be available free of charge to community organisations with a penchant for crafting. If you are a community minded group looking for a comfortable and friendly place to gather, please contact Fiona at The Markets Wanniassa to book a time for your group to meet.  Bookings are essential as there is limited space, and will not be available during workshop classes.

Stella Bella really is a Little Star, and so is her incredible mum Suzanne.  Suzanne and her partner lost their beautiful baby girl Stella in 2010 due to childhood heart disease.   An inspiration to many, Suzanne set about creating Stella Bella Little Stars Foundation to provide support to children and families experiencing life with an ill child.

From financial assistance, emotional support and Stella’s bead program, Stella Bella Little Stars Foundation provides assistance in so many ways. The Annual Stella Bella Ball is primary fundraiser for the Foundation, an absolute must on the social calendar, and all for a fabulous cause.

If you are interested in volunteering, donating or contributing towards Stella Bella Little Stars Foundation please contact  Suzanne via the official Stella Bella Little Stars website here

The Markets Wanniassa will be supporting Stella Bella Little Stars Foundation in various ways, including starting a “Stella Group” – volunteers can come along and help sort beads, sew bags, and provide any other help needed.
